Turbo Tax is a Dick
Turbo tax tries to screw you out of the $19.95 e-file fee for state taxes. Just mail your state taxes in, only e-file federal. The only downside is TurboTax makes it difficult to do it. This is how you make it work: E-file federal don’t file State Once complete click on Print & File again On the first page it will ask if you want to e-file federal, choose file by mail The next screen...

The fact that he has so radically rethought author ship is actually super-interesting. It makes me think of some of these modern artists (Jeff Koons, I think; definitely Takashi Murakami) who operate entire, like, production facilities. They delegate a lot of the work of actu ally fabricating their stuff to other people. I wonder if there’s a way to take some of that spirit—the notion that...

Jive Turkey
So I plan on posting a little roundup of my first week at work. But it’s safe to say it’s going pretty well and I’m enjoying it quite a bit. Also there are a ton of Thai places around the office. For anyone intersted I  found a couple flickr sets of the office. Jive is located in the old federal reserve building (there is a GIANT vault in the basement) that’s why they call...

Lance Albertson, architect and systems administrator at the Oregon State University Open Source Lab uses a sys admin staff of 18-21 year old undergrads to manage servers for some high profile open source projects (Linux Master Kernel, Linux Foundation, Apache Software Foundation, and Drupal to name a few). In this Q&A, Albertson talks about the challenges of using young sys admins and the...

Not just tethering, but tethering for up to five clients — pretty much like having a built-in Mi-Fi. Must be nice to be on Verizon. Meanwhile, over in AT&T’s shantytown, still no iPhone tethering at all. [via Daring Fireball] This is enough to make me seriously consider one of these things.

Tagging Books →
Haarlem Oost is a branch library in the Netherlands that wanted to encourage visitors to add tags […] to the books they read. […] To do this, the library didn’t create a complicated computer system or send people online. Instead, they installed more book drops and return shelves, labeled with different descriptors like “boring,” “great for kids,” “funny,” etc. Awesome and...

I dislike Wordpress’s mechnism for updates. It works but I wish it used sftp instead of ftps. This puts together the most secure way to run ftps through vsftpd.
